Gobblers

You play noughts and crosses on a three-by-three board, except that your pieces are hollow cups in three sizes and a bigger one can swallow a smaller one, yours or your opponent's. Three of your colour in a row wins. On your turn you either bring a new piece onto the board or move one already there to any space where it fits, gobbling whatever is underneath. The memory part is what turns a children's game into a real one: lift your big piece and you may uncover an enemy piece that completes their line. Games last a few minutes, the rules take thirty seconds, and it is an ideal first strategy game for a five-year-old against a parent. We also see adults playing it at the café while they wait for their coffee.
